Murmur theatre club

Let’s talk about the theatre we see

Theatre is a communal experience. It happens in real time, in a room full of strangers. Good theatre should elicit thoughts and emotions - that's why we go to the theatre! And those thoughts and emotions are important to discuss. However, many of us don't get the chance because we simply don't know people who have seen the same show.

That’s what Murmur Theatre Club is for - to connect audience members who want to talk about what they see. This is not a talkback, not a lecture, and not an evening with theatre makers - this is a space for audience members to exchange ideas, hear different perspectives, and reflect on what they've experienced.

What we will discuss:

Two characters from Orpheus Descending talking at a bar counter

Orpheus Descending (by Tennessee Williams)

directed by Will Detlefsen

in Oakland Theater Project

A charismatic young drifter arrives in a small community shaped by prejudice and moral control. His presence awakens desires for love, justice, and self-determination - and sparks devastating consequences.

Born of the Southern Gothic but urgently national, Tennessee Williams re-imagines the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as a fever dream of America - one where the promise of freedom is received not as a refuge, but as a threat.

How did you hear about this?

What to know about the Murmur Theatre Club

Do I need to see the show first?

Yes, please! Discussing the show with other people who have seen it is the point of our Theatre Club. You can see any of the scheduled performances that work for you, as long as it’s before our meeting. Go to whichever performance works for you, any time before the meeting.

What should I expect?

We’ll meet at a public place not too far from the theatre to discuss the show. We expect an intimate, audience-only conversation - people who saw the same show, comparing notes, asking questions, and sharing their experience. Vera will facilitate the discussion, but there will be no lecture, or talk-back of any kind.

Do I need to prepare?

You don’t need to prepare anything, but we appreciate an open heart and mind!

How much does it cost?

The meeting is free but you’ll need to. You buy your own ticket to the show. Please remember to register so we know how many of us to expect.
